Hit The Reset Button

Have you ever wanted just to hit reset on your day? Go back and correct a harsh word or action? The past few days have been trying, a test of faith and trusting in God in spite of the bumps in the road I didn’t expect. But God’s word always soothes me – I turn to a favorite Psalm or verse and I can feel the tension ease out of my neck and shoulders.

A sigh escaped my lips when I read this:

"The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the Lord are true, they are righteous altogether." Psalm 19:7-9

Sometimes all I can do is reread verses like this until the fear of failure, the misunderstanding of others or my own human nature can be eased and I'm reminded that I am His. These verses are promises from God telling me He can be counted on. He speaks to us through His Word and, unlike the empty promises of politicians or misleading rhetoric of self interest groups, God's Word and character is yes and amen.

"For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes, therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us." 2 Corinthians 1:20

Every time I open my Bible I’m hitting my reset button. God’s word restores what my day has depleted. When I read it first thing in the morning His word prepares me for my day. Whenever I read it I am always reminded of His love and devotion to me.

Hit reset today – spend time with Jesus Christ through His Word and through prayer.

Rest

"Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable." Hebrews 4:13

Do you find yourself starting to pray then go off on "rabbit trails" in your mind? Thoughts about what you need to do today, thoughts about disappointments or hurts you have to deal with, dealing with people's expectations for you, confusion and, yes, fear concerning what is happening in the world outside your door. Rabbit trails. Do you find yourself losing inner peace because of where these thoughts lead you? I do.

For me, anger (I like to justify it as righteous anger) arises at the injustice I see in the world. In Psalm 73, Asaph couldn't tear his eyes off the world and the people who profit the world's way and it was taking him down,

"What does God know?' they ask. 'Does the Most High even know what's happening?" verse 11

Everything changed when he went into God's sanctuary and he saw circumstances from God's eyes. He saw the end in store for everyone who rejects God's love through unbelief, through rebellion, through self promotion. And he realized he was bitter and torn up inside (verse 21).

He didn't remain in that place of turmoil. He remembered who God is. He remembered who he is in God. "Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand." (verse 23) He found rest.

"God's promise of entering his rest still stands..." Hebrews 4:1a
"For only we who believe can enter his rest." Hebrews 4:3a

The antidote for today's unrest is to spend time with Jesus, the Word of God. When we open His Word and read, we are cleansed and refreshed. We gain God's perspective on what is happening in the world, in our lives, in our dear ones' lives...in everything that concerns us.

"For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires." Hebrews 4:12

God uses His Word to expose to us what is really going on. What is bugging us...what keeps us from fully committing our day, our lives, to Him. He turns us to Jesus, this High Priest of ours, who understands our weaknesses (because he went through all the temptations and testings we do, but gave us the victory because HE DID NOT SIN). Jesus, who loves us, who holds our right hand.

"So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will find grace to help us when we need it most." Hebrews 4:16

Jesus. The thought-changer. The healer. The One who matures our faith. The One who gives us rest. It's a choice. It's an action. We must come.

"Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light." Matthew 11:28-30

No Surprise

"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You." Isaiah 26:3

"I'm sorry to say, but due to the ever-changing conditions in Ghana, the chances of bringing home an orphan anytime soon, are not looking good."

Our social worker has such a sweet spirit, but her words were just too bitter to swallow this time. We sat on our couch and completed our Home Study update. It was hard not to think: What's the point? We aren't getting matched with our child soon...if ever.

Having been in the international adoption process for three years now, I know better than to beat my brain with questions I will never have the answers to. Most importantly, I know not to challenge God in His wisdom.

A part of me sunk when our social worker explained that a new person in power was holding all child cases back from being dispensed to waiting families. But one thing I heard above my clattering thoughts:

"Daughter, this is no surprise to me."

This was no surprise to God...
This was no surprise to God...
This was no surprise to God.

The "me" of two years ago would have written a seemingly justified letter:

"Dear God,
DON'T YOU KNOW...
Conditions in Afica for orphans are bleak?
Politics and pride are coming before the needs of children?
There are over one million orphans in Ghana?
We have been on the wait list for over a year now?
All we want to do is Your kingdom work (just in case you forgot).
Love,
A concerned citizen of the kingdom of God"

But, not this time. Sometimes God gives us a little glimpse of how He has grown us. This was one of those gracious moments. Just the soft whisper in my spirit, "Daughter, this is no surprise to me," was like an anointing of peace.

It has been months since this conversation, and the peace hasn't left me. In fact, He has allowed it to echo through my heart as new challenges have risen up. It feels like a crown He has placed on my head. It is not going anywhere. I am so in awe of this sweet gift.

Peace in knowing God is not surprised by anything is a valuable shield against the enemy. God loves me. All His plans are for my good. All of His plans are to bring more people into His salvation kingdom. Not some of them, not most of them...ALL of them. Every...Single...Detail. Every delay, every hitch in paperwork, every "roadblock," every signature, every blessing, every trial, every person I speak to...He will use in my life for His good purposes. He will use it all to bring glory to His name. He will use it to shout of His love for the lost. Period. This is true whether I believe it or not.

I believe it.
I welcome it.
I stand on it.

It is important that we read God's word. It is imperative that we live it in our everyday circumstances.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

May I Serve You, Lord?
(but in Anaheim?)

May I please serve you My King, but my way?

God called me to be a missionary. That is my heart's passion. That is my joy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah . . . I've heard it all before. Serve where planted. Make our neighborhoods, our workplace, our school our mission field. Blah, blah, blah.

After many, many, many prayers (translation: whining and complaining) God heard my mission prayers. Persistent prayers pay off, haven't you heard? God responded by distinctly showing me my mission field - Anaheim.

God must have been distracted when He answered my prayers because He didn't get it quite right.

No God, You called me first to foreign missions, doncha' remember?
Can't you see how we can serve with Phil and Darla in Ethiopia?
Look how compatible we are with the Tebbes. Our kids are buddies; we can serve with them in Ireland?
How about Russia? Ken can teach the adults and I can teach the kids at English camps?

"Anaheim!"

How about Cuba? How about a short trip to Cuba?
To Romania to love the street kids?
To Mexico for a weekend?

"Anaheim!"

Anaheim?

"Anaheim!"

Here in Downtown Anaheim we are surrounded by families that do not speak English. Our yard is the closest to a play area other than the streets. Four and five year olds roam the streets late at night without adult supervision. Families often run out of their welfare funds before the end of the month. This is where the "canned food drives" are distributed.

The sandbox, the trampoline, the tree house, and the jungle gym in our yard make this place a kid magnet. We never lack kids wanting to come and play. Surprisingly many older kids also want to hang here.

OK God, if this is it, the least You can do is give me a supernatural ability to love Anaheim.

God, I complained. These kids want to come far more often than I have the ability to watch them. They leave trash everywhere. They use vulgar language and are rude. I find them playing in our yard when we're not home after being asked over and over not to.

"Teach them rules and boundaries."

How often Lord? I repeat myself over and over and they don't show any respect.

"Teach them only as often as I have taught you."

Oh!
Well, it's not the same !

"It isn't?"

No, Lord, it's not. These kids aren't likable. Well . . . I guess I'm not either. I lost patience with that lady at the store that snapped at me. My thoughts and actions today haven't been so likable. No, I'm often very un-likable. In fact, now that I think about all I've done, I can't stand myself.

"I love you, Child."

God, they want to use the bathroom all the time, they want drinks, they want snacks. Lord, I'm busy. Dad requires so much time. The kids need me. When was the last time I went out with my husband? And we can't afford to feed them all!

"I gave you the house with the bathroom, money to buy the snacks, and the car to go and purchase the snacks."

That's not what I want to hear. What I want is for You to supernaturally send them elsewhere and only send me the cute polite ones. Only send me the sweet ones that are easy to love and serve. Please send them when I have the house cleaned, outside work done, lemons picked to make a pitcher of lemonade, bake a batch of cookies, and have time to sit with them at the kitchen table to smile and lovingly share how much Jesus loves them - and tell them how much I love Jesus.

"If you love Me, feed My sheep in Anaheim.
Not just when you have the time...
Not just when you feel like it...
Not just the way you see fit..., even if it's just to teach them boundaries.
Serving Me doesn't mean you should say "yes" to everything. It means spending time with Me to know My heart's desire for these kids, what values I desire to instill in them to be equipped for their future.

You'd be amazed what I can do with just a few minutes.
In the future, will these kids reflect back and remember the busy, cranky asian lady, or
will they remember the way you gave them a genuine smile and
allowed them to play for 10 minutes?

This is not only about them. It's also about you being blessed. It's an opportunity for you to learn wisdom, organizational skills, detect opportunities to love, when to say no or yes. It's an opportunity for you to experience My love as you learn to love the unlovable and needy Anaheim. You see, Child, I can use a donkey to accomplish my work in Anaheim but I want to bless YOU by you being my vessel in Anaheim.

Even the wicked can do good and love when all the circumstances are right. Child – don't just love with Thanksgiving Meals or big mission events 2-3 times a year. Love them daily when there is an opportunity to do so. These opportunities won't always be there. Don't miss them now.

I'll take your 'widow's mite of 10 minutes' and do mighty things if you give with a sincere and humble heart."

"Anaheim!"

I'm starting to get a vague idea...slowly understand...begin to recognize...that maybe Anaheim is where God wants me serve Him today.

Praise The Lord

"Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights!" Psalm 148

CREATOR
Order came to chaos,
Stars sprinkled on a velvety sky,
Mountains lay like sleeping giants waiting to be awakened.
Creator God painted the morning skies in blue and pink and purple and, as the sun began to descend to take its rest, brilliant orange, red and gold.
Rainbows painted the sky after rain, a reminder of a promise made.
Oceans roared, running streams sang over rocks and waves gently caressed the shores.
Cattle will graze, bird’s will fly, Cheetahs will run; each listening and waiting for their Creator’s song and for that day when the lion and the lamb will sit side by side, again.

"The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain, says the LORD." Isaiah 65:25

PURPOSE GIVER
He looked past worthlessness, brokenness and fear.
He gives purpose, wholeness and peace.
Empty lives are filled.
The outpouring of God's love lifts us from the mundane, from lives without vision or direction and replaces in us direction and vision for a life with a sacred purpose.
Jesus Christ is stronger than our problems and helps us to overcome fear of the unknown.
All seeing and all knowing--nothing is hidden from Him.
Ever vigilant, He neither slumbers nor sleeps.

"Behold, He that keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep." Psalm 121:4

SAVIOUR
A King came as a Servant, the meek overcame the strong, and humility overcame pride.
Light shone into the darkness, limitless, unending love;
Eternal life instead of death; changed stony hearts into malleable ones.
Grace given to the undeserved.
Mercy poured out like a flood.
Cleansing Blood!
Jesus Christ is LORD!

"I, I am the LORD, and besides Me there is no Saviour." Isaiah 43:11

FRIEND
Sing the highest praises and dance with joy and abandon.
Tell everyone what our LORD Jesus Christ, our friend, has done for us...
so we can tell of salvation that all may call Him friend...
so they can know how to live in the grace given and, in turn, be graceful and encourage the weak, the confused, the friendless in the same way His Word has encouraged and strengthened us.

"No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you." John 15:15

Joy is the melody in my heart because I know I am His.
My love for the Lord soars through every part of my heart, my mind and spirit.
It takes me to places that, for now, I can only dream of.
Father God's Agape Love for us pushes away disobedient, stubborn pride, lies and bad habits.
It replaces them with:
Truth and joy in spite of trials...
Obedience in spite of fear...
Humility in the face of unending faithfulness.

"Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow." Jeremiah 31:13

Creator...
Purpose Giver...
Saviour...
Friend...
Lover of my soul...
Shepherd...
Father...
I can go on and on, but for today this will be enough. I know that tomorrow there will be another list which gives Adonai, Abba Father, the praise He is due.

"And the ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away." Isaiah 35:10
