The Radiance of His Glory

“God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power.” Hebrews 1:1-3b

Since creation, God has given us patterns and examples of the way His plan for man’s redemption would unfold. Down through the centuries He spoke through the writers of the Old Testament and established physical pictures in everyday life which portrayed spiritual truths in order for us to understand and then recognize our Messiah. The covenants, reconciliation by way of a sacrifice, the redemption of land and people, the symbols of a bride and bridegroom, all spoke of God’s imminent salvation.

Then, out of eternity, Jesus—the centerpiece of God’s exquisite plan—was sent to us. Today, we celebrate this joyous event as Christmas. God was—and now is—seen and heard clearly in Jesus, the most precious and priceless gift ever given. Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of God’s nature.

I praise You, Lord God, for the gift of Jesus!

God Loves Even the Nobodies

“This is real love—not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” 1 John 4:10

As a young Pastor’s wife in our first church, I was delighted to be able to teach First and Second graders in Sunday School. Many of the verses included in the curriculum were condensed to a simple phrase for the children to memorize. Many of those verses were lodged in my own heart and have caused my faith to grow ever since.

A simplified version of I John 4:10 was one of the verses used during the Christmas season and it comes to mind each December.

“God loved us… and sent His Son.”

That is why I celebrate His birth.

The Lamb of God, born in a stable, because God, the Father, loved me with an everlasting love. Even when I don’t feel worthy of His love, I know it is steadfast.

Our Heavenly Father poured that same love out on the shepherds and let them know of His birth first! The sky lit up with Angels, greater than any fireworks display man could imagine … Angels, with a birth announcement for simple shepherds. Huddled together around a campfire, they witnessed a bit of heaven as the birth of the King was announced. The shepherds were nobodies—comfortable in a stable, not dressed to receive the invitation to welcome the newborn King—but whose hearts were ready to receive Him.

I, too, came to the King dressed in filthy rags, not deserving to be in His presence. But He, like His Father, loved me and clothed me in a beautiful robe of righteousness.

He didn’t have to tell the shepherds to go and tell the world about the first Christmas Miracle and the King who had been born in Bethlehem. They couldn’t contain their joy.

May we so focus on our King that what we know about Him bubbles over into the lives of those around us.

Yes, “Joy to the World!” “God loves Y-O-U and so He sent His Son.

“Joy to the World! The Lord is come:
let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare him room
and heaven and nature sing.”**

The Perfect Gift

“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3

My mind forever changed about Christmas nine years ago. My husband had been released from a month-long stay at City of Hope just weeks before. His stage four cancer was in remission and the stem cell transplant was a success. He was alive. He was home. Our family was together again.

Nothing mattered like it had in Christmases past—buying that perfect gift … getting that perfect gift … dressing the house and packages just so. Nothing mattered but the indescribable gift of God in Jesus—and the souls for whom He came to save.

This is Christmas.

The Christmas Gift of Being Heaven Bound

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by His great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a pricelsss inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.” 1 Peter 1:3-4

A few years ago, my mom, who had been widowed, came to spend Christmas with my husband, Michael, my daughter, Lindsay, and me. I loved being able to spoil Mom for a change—to cook for her and take her shopping. We had a wonderful time, full of laughter and fun events. The following Christmas God blessed us with the whole family getting together at Mom’s house, but this particular year was a special season, because one of us went to Heaven.

My Aunt Margie was my favorite aunt. When I was a child, I spent one of the best summers of my life at her home in Palatine, Illinois. Years ago, this area was a child’s dream, as it was composed of many horse and pony farms. My family spent two weeks there with my Uncle Paul and my cousins, swimming in their pool, going to the zoo, museums, and even the country stores in Downers Grove where I got to taste my first sugar rock candy. Who needed summer camp when we had my Aunt Margie?

The years had passed quickly, as they always do. My aunt now resided in an assisted living facility in Sacramento. Her son—my cousin, Doug—oversaw her care. After Christmas was over, we all went up north so my mom could see her sister, Margie. They were always very close, the best of friends. Though my aunt had slowed down quite a bit, she was still lucid and full of light. Because I was fighting a cold, I dozed on the couch, but I could hear them sharing childhood memories and laughing once again. Though we didn’t speak about it, we figured it would probably be their last time together on earth.

“Remember when you threw Doris’ (their youngest sister) clothes up the attic stairs because she wouldn’t hang them up?” Aunt Margie asked..

“Yes,” Mom replied. They laughed together.

“Remember when you wrestled that boy because he called you a name?” Mom said.

Yes, I remember,” More laughter.

It went on like that all afternoon, two sisters sharing childhood memories. Later, we took Aunt Margie to her favorite Chinese restaurant. The place reminded me of that movie, A Christmas Story, where the Chinese waiters sing Jingle Bells to the family and serve them duck. But it wasn’t the food we ate that mattered the most. It was family. When we finally hugged my aunt and said good-bye, it was a bittersweet memory that is forever etched in my brain. She and my Mom held each other a long time, then Aunt Margie said, “See you on the other side.”

As we prepare to celebrate another Christmas—and the real reason we celebrate, the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ—I am reminded why God came to this Earth. He came to give eternal life to all who believe in Him. When my aunt said, “See you on the other side,” she meant, “see you in Heaven,” which is where she went a few months later.

As I think of this amazing gift of God’s love, I am reminded of Jesus’ promise in the gospel of John:

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And, if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself.” John 14:1-3:

I am also reminded of these verses:

“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then, the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all the people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” Luke 2: 8-14

What a gift! It is one that I pray we all can unwrap as we open our hearts to Jesus. It is one which surely enables us to say: “See you on the other side.”

Have a Heavenly Christmas!

The Prince's Bride

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on His shoulders. And He will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of His ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!” Isaiah 9:6-7 (NLT)

When I’ve had a break in the busyness of preparing for our celebration of Thanksgiving and Christmas, my favorite mode of “mindless vegging” has been to curl up under a comfy blanket and watch the current schedule of Hallmark Christmas Movies (which began sometime in October—what?). The movies’ themes are predictable and can be summed up in three elements: romance, struggle, and victory—aka happy ending.

I’ve discovered my favorite selections are those that involve royalty. You know the plot: handsome prince in want of a wife finds his soul mate in a beautiful young woman who tradition says is unacceptable due to her low station in life. No chance in eternity she could be chosen unless the prince went against reason, rules and tradition, stepped down to her level and lifted her up to his.

That’s why I love these stories. They remind me the true Prince is Jesus and the bride is __________ (put your name in the blank space). He left His throne to search for His bride. The bride price? His sacrificial death on the cross. May we never underestimate the price He paid to bring us into union with Him.

“I am overwhelmed with joy in the LORD my God! For He has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom in his wedding suit or a bride with her jewels.” Isaiah 61:10 (NLT)

He fulfilled many prophecies in His first coming, proof that He keeps His word. And He has promised to come again for His bride.

“In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:2-3 (KJV)

“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.” Revelation 22:17 (NLT)
