IN THE LORD ALONE

“I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving, And will call on the name of the LORD.” Psalm 116:17

As we readied ourselves for 2021, I pondered many thoughts about 2020. A pandemic alone was plenty enough for a year, but for many loss was also part of life . . . loss of normalcy . . . loss of jobs . . . loss of security . . . loss of loved ones. Our hearts still ache for our Tebbe family, the loss of both Shawn’s mom and sister in a short distance of time. The highs and lows of one year!

It would be easy to want to move on quickly from 2020 and not recognise moments. The moments that God encompassed us . . . the moments His sovereignty stayed ahead of us . . . the moments of His sweetness in the midst of sorrow . . . the moments His love embraced us . . . the moments His faithfulness continued to steer us . . . the moments of His joy in the midst of grief . . . the moments His wisdom directed us in the chaos.

I choose thankfulness when I remember 2020. Gratitude for the depths that the Lord has carried us through. That is why, as 2020 has faded into 2021, I will be found singing Him praise. In the Lord alone I put my trust for the New Year! The love of God can not be locked down.

Thoughts For the New Year

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

What a perfect way to end 2020, and start 2021; by focusing on God’s promises.

This past year brought a lot of unexpected challenges—loss, heartache and more. It also allowed God to show Himself strong on behalf of his children. We were blessed to be able to see Him do miracles, provide in amazing ways, remain faithful and True, and fulfill every promise in His Word to us.

Every day of 2021 will be faced with choices and some may bring new challenges. Jesus told us that this world is gonna get crazier and more evil (and lots of false teaching luring even the elect from the Truth) before He returns for His bride (the church). The best way to make wise choices is to seek Him in all things (Proverbs 3:5-6) and spend that important time alone in fellowship with Him (prayer and His Word). We will then walk in His Truth and be better equipped for any challenges that may come.

“Let me hear Your faithfulness in the morning, For I trust in You; Teach me the way in which I should walk; for to You I lift up my soul.” Psalm 143:8

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.” Matthew 6:33

“Brothers and sisters, I do not regard myself as having taken hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. “ Philippians 3:13-14

“Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.” Psalm 37:4-5

Remember God is Good

“Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me. Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish.” Isaiah 46:9-10

I’m making a mental note of all the answers to prayer I’ve witnessed in 2020. God has answered every one, some in ways hoped for, some in ways that have been tinged with sadness, and some where the answer was “wait.” But, in every case God has listened, stretched and deepened my faith and encouraged me with His presence. My prayers have closed with “Thy will be done” because I continually remind myself that His ways are higher than mine and there is no power that can come against Him and win.

God has told us…

“Look around at the nations; look and be amazed! For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn’t believe even if someone told you about it.” Habakkuk 1:5

… and …

“This vision (the work He is doing) is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed. Habakkuk 2:3

We are dismayed by the potential changes in our country through the questionable results of the elections and the reality of a tiny organism to bring fear, lock downs, severe illness and death to so many. Evil seems to reign, but God says …

“Look at the proud! They trust in themselves, and their lives are crooked. But the righteous will live by their faithfulness to God.” Habakkuk 2:4

Our faith pleases God, because we believe He is Holy Almighty God who opens doors no man can shut and closes doors no power can open (Revelation 3:8) and He rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6)

No prayer is left unanswered, no longing heart turned away by Him. Has he not so longed for us that He gave His Son’s lifeblood to save us and His Holy Spirit to transform us into the likeness of Jesus’ Holy nature? Whatever circumstances have come into our lives are God-designed to show us—and the world—His sustaining power that we might have Hope and Peace through the trying—through the tears to the joy of the LORD being our strength.

As the body of Christ, we can share our concerns with each other, our needs for strength and healing AND God’s answers to our prayers. We share GOD, and our voices rise in harmonious hymns of ongoing praise and giving of thanks to our good, GOOD Abba Father.

How glorious it will be when we rise to meet our Blessed Hope. Jesus is coming soon! We are closer than we’ve ever been. Maranatha!

The First Christmas Present

“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose origins are from the distant past (“from everlasting” KJV)” Micah 5:2 (NLT)

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity.” Isaiah 9:6-7 (NLT)

“…an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. ‘Joseph, son of David,’ the angel said, ‘do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: ‘Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.” Matthew 1:20-23

“Don’t be afraid, Mary,’ the angel told her, ‘for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end.’ Mary asked the angel, ‘But how can this happen? I am a virgin.’ The angel replied, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. ”
Luke 1:30-35 (NLT)

“At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He travelled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, his fiancee, who was now obviously pregnant. And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them, ‘Don’t be afraid!’ he said. ‘I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.’ When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the lord has told us about.’ They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.” Luke 2:1-20 (NLT)

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child,
and shall bring forth a son,
and they shall call his name Emmanuel,
which being interpreted is,
God with us.”
Matthew 1:23 (KJV)

Editor’s Note for your consideration: It would have taken Mary and Joseph close to a week to walk the near 90 mile distance from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Scripture gives no details about the actual journey. We do know they were poor (based on the sacrifice they brought to the temple) and that people in those days travelled in groups for protection from wild animals and bandits, so Mary probably walked the entire distance during her final month of pregnancy.

Eternal Praise

“…I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God’s unfailing love. I will praise you forever, O God, for what you have done. I will trust in your good name in the presence of your faithful people.” Psalm 52:8-9

I received a Christmas letter from my brother, Simon, that really made me think about the heaviness of this last year’s circumstances and its antidote. I joined him in meditating on Phiilippians 4:8

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

I’d like to share his words, for he says it much better than I.

“As I took my walk on White Road into the redwoods my heart was heavy with life’s pains and sorrows that my family has endured through this challenging year. As I meditated on Philippians 4:8, I looked up at the beautiful majestic tall redwood trees on the side of a steep hill and wondered how they were able to grow and survive. I wondered what it was like being a sapling and dealing with all the challenges of life with droughts, mud slides and even fires. What kept them growing? I then realized it was the sun that gave them life to mature into tall, majestic trees. Every day the sun would nurture them. However, the life-giving precious rays of light are actually from a massive star dying, and with its breath it shines brightly, thus reminding me of what Jesus Christ did for us.

Jesus Christ, the “ultimate light of the world,” also died so we can have life. And as we go through life’s struggles and pains, let us never, ever forget what Jesus Christ did for us by dying on a cross to pay for our sins so we can have life. As for all trees, they will eventually die and decay, but—for us who are chosen thru faith and hope—when we die, our souls will get even closer to the Son and live for all eternity with no more sorrows or pain, but only praise for God the Son…”

“Praise the Father, Praise the Son,
Praise the Spirit, Three in One.
Clothed in power and in grace
the name above all other names.”
(Lyrics by Chris Tomlin)

Almighty God, this Christmas season may we focus our thoughts upon Your great gift to us—the innocent baby meant to grow into the man who would save us from our sins. May all that is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and worthy of praise guide our thoughts and actions. May Your joy be our strength and Your Blessed Hope be our peace. We submit to Your will and ask that the events coming in 2021 will draw us closer to You, exercising the confidence that You will intervene in our lives and in world events to bring about Your plan for the ages. You are Faithful God, Keeper of Your promises, our good, Good Father. May Your Praise ever be in our hearts and on our lips. You are Love, and we offer back to you what you have freely given us. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
